JIMMY BARNES – My Criminal Record [Limited 2-CD Deluxe Edition] (2019)

Australian rock icon JIMMY BARNES is back with a brand-new album, “My Criminal Record”, his first new original LP in almost a decade. This Limited Collectors Deluxe Double CD Set includes a second disc exclusive to this limited package, plus a digibook. This is the first and only pressing / individually numbered.
Barnes published his memoir book ‘Working Class Boy’ in 2016, which revived interest in the Australian rock legend. It has also revitalised his music. “My Criminal Record” is a very strong album.

This is a collection of blues-based rock that carries with it a solid thump at all times, some with the typical Barnes rocking approach, other intimate.
A strong part of his record success are its lyrics, like ‘Shutting Down Our Town’, a song ostensibly about the disappearing industries of working-class suburbs like those Barnes grew up in during the 1960s and 70s’.

There’s an amped up cover of John Lennon’s ‘Working Class Hero’, while on the ‘easy rockers’ side, ‘Money and Class’ and ‘If Time Was On My Side’ are among the best.
The regular album finishes with Springsteen’s ‘Tougher Than the Rest’, leaning into the loved ’80s sound of the original, offering multiple layers and a closed circle.
The bonus disc delivers more worthy material, including a track re-mixed by the legendary Bob Clearmountain.

Overall, “My Criminal Record” is a passionate return for Australia’s working class hero Jimmy Barnes.
