Their sonic trademarks – synthesizer harmonies, keyboard-guitar riffs, melodic arrangements, and the charismatic vocals of frontman Michael Sadler – have made Saga an influential rock act of the modern era.
Celebrating the band’s four-decade legacy earMUSIC continues with the band’s reissue series exquisitely remastered and these “must own” releases will be welcome additions to the musical libraries of the Saga faithful.
The criminally underrated “Steel Umbrellas” is best known for featuring a more commercial side of the band. Well, occurs this material was originally composed as a soundtrack for a TV series called ‘Cobra’, which needed an ’80s feel. Mixed by Mike Ging (Toto, Michael Jackson, Nazareth) in L.A., “Steel Umbrellas” takes you straight back to a pure glossy Eighties sound. Production is huge, bombastic, very Eighties indeed.

“Pleasure and the Pain” is the band’s twelfth studio album, the first and only to feature Glen Sobel on drums. There was a previous remestered reissue of “Pleasure and the Pain” but the band wasn’t happy with the saturated sound of it.
Pleasure and the Pain (Remastered 2021 +1)” sounds much more comfortable, clean, preserving harmonics…

SAGA – Generation 13 +1 [Remastered reissue 2021] HQ

Over 40 years have passed since Canadian melodic prog-rock band SAGA released their self-titled debut album. Since then, they have been an exceptional musical phenomenon and toured the globe various times — all the while selling over 10 million albums worldwide.

Inspired in part by the book “13th Gen: Abort, Retry, Ignore, Fail?” by Neil Howe & Bill Strauss, in a time when grunge was the sound of the day, in June of 1995 SAGA released ”Generation 13”… a concept album, musically away from the melodic crossover prog the band was known for.
Saga’s answered the industry with perhaps their most pure PROG and sophisticated album ever.
To put it short, ”Generation 13” is a Prog Rock masterpiece, one you need to listen…

SAGA – Network [Remastered reissue 2022] HQ

Over 40 years have passed since Canadian melodic prog-rock band SAGA released their self-titled debut album. Since then, they have been an exceptional musical phenomenon and toured the globe various times — all the while selling over 10 million albums worldwide.

Celebrating the band’s four-decade legacy earMUSIC continues with the band’s reissue series exquisitely remastered and these “must own” releases will be welcome additions to the musical libraries of the Saga faithful.
In typical Saga fashion, ”Network” saw the band – Sadler, Jim & Ian Crichton and Jim Gilmour, joined by Christian Simpson on drums for the first time – set out to record a concept album revolving around the theme of television programming. The album features a variety of fantastic call-backs to early Saga albums, as well as numerous standout songs such as the powerful opener ‘On The Air’ and the epic ‘Don’t Make A Sound’…

SIX BY SIX – Six by Six (2022)

Now we have here “Six by Six“, the debut album from new super-group SIX BY SIX comprising the immense talents of vocalist / bassist Robert Berry (‘3’, AMBROSIA, ALLIANCE), guitarist Ian Crichton (SAGA) and legendary drummer Nigel Glockler (ASIA, GTR, SAXON).
On paper, this looks awesome… on your music player… even more awesome!
“Six by Six” is a clever, easy listening but regarding 45 minutes of prog-influenced heavy rock, I should say melodic rock with strong proggy arrangements and atmospheres. Berry is a terrific – and very underrated – vocalist delivering colorful performances, while the signature guitar sound of Crichton provides the final touch to an all-around harmonic longplayer…

Marathon” was the third in a trio of interconnected Saga albums that begun with ‘Full Circle’ and continued with ‘House Of Cards’, and all of the band’s trademarks are here: the distinctive vocals of Michael Sadler, the characteristic “pompous” guitar and keyboard sound, the usual clean production, and the archetypal catchy melodies…

Produced by keyboardist Jim Crichton and recorded in L.A., “House Of Cards” got a bigger and more transparent sound than previous record ‘Full Circle’, with the songs more AORish and easy listening…

SAGA – Full Circle [Remastered reissue 2021] HQ

Full Circle” doesn’t feel like a 1999 album, it feels timeless song-wise and this remaster brings back some bass and guitar details not so clear in the original release…

SAGA – The Security Of Illusion +1 [Remastered reissue 2021] HQ

In 2021, earMUSIC is celebrating SAGA’s four-decade legacy launching a reissue series exquisitely remastered and these “must own” releases will be welcome additions to the musical libraries of the Saga faithful. Their sonic trademarks – synthesizer harmonies, keyboard-guitar riffs, melodic arrangements, and the charismatic vocals of frontman Michael Sadler – have made Saga an influential rock act of the modern era.
The ninth studio album “The Security of Illusion” was originally released 1993 and marks the return of Jim Gilmour (keyboards) and Steve Negus (drums), who both had left the band in 1986. This new reunion definitely sparked new creativity into the band.
This is easily one of our favorite SAGA albums, mixing their classic style with an early ’90s American AOR sound, and now this 2021 reissue comes out of the speakers wonderfully pristine. One of the best remastering jobs we heard in a while.
Simply put, if you love Journey’s Trial By Fire / Raised On Radio albums (who doesn’t?), you NEED “The Security Of Illusion”…

SAGA – The Beginner’s Guide To Throwing Shapes +1 [Remastered reissue 2021] HQ

1989’s “The Beginner’s Guide To Throwing Shapes” was the second Saga album without original drummer Steve Negus and longtime keyboardist / vocalist Jim Gilmour, and for first-time fans of the band this is not the ‘real’ Saga.
However, we disagree: the core of Ian & Jim Crichton and Michael Sadler is still here, and the band simply evolved to the mainstream rock sound ruling the late ’80s with an uber polished, bombastic sound.
This 2021 remaster is excellent, including as bonus track the rare 1991 single ‘The Call’…

SAGA – Behaviour (1985) [Remastered reissue 2021] HQ

Behaviour” sees SAGA definitely embracing the mainstream sound of the year of its release – 1985 – and what we have here is one of the Canadians most commercial-sounding albums however not less meaty in songwriting. This is plenty of AOR synths, rock&pop melodies, and radio-friendly choruses…

When this self-titled debut appeared in 1978, they almost created a new sub-genre; Neo Prog. They managed to instill a clearly poppish freshness into the realms of sympho-prog using catchy melodic lines, not too complicated rhythm patterns, and tons of attractive synth layers and orchestrations. But this is not all about synths: Ian Crichton’s guitar riffs, harmonies and brilliant solos find a way to shine with a light of its own among the whole keyboard paraphernalia…
