CHEAP TRICK – In Color [re-recorded 1997 / the Unreleased Steve Albini sessions] *0dayrox Exclusive*

To complete the CHEAP TRICK series featured here, now we have a rarity: ”In Color re-recorded 1997 / the Unreleased Steve Albini sessions”. At the second half of the ’90s CHEAP TRICK was working on a project with producer Steve Albini, and in-between Zander & Co. decided to re-record the band’s 2nd album ‘In Color’. They were happy with Tom Werman’s original production – which discovered CHEAP TRICK’s power pop side – but disliked the mix.
So with Albini behind the desk, CHEAP TRICK re-cut all the original ‘In Color’ 10-track songs, with a rawer approach and almost recorded live into the studio, with a few overdubs. The band also taped 5 extra songs at these sessions (also included into this file).
This recording never was officially released but found its way into the hands of some collectors via a cassette-dubbed master-sourced CD leaked by an ex-employee of the band.
We have compared several copies floating around, but none sounds as good as this one owned by one of 0dayrox‘s staff member.

In February of 1977, Cheap Trick unleashed its self titled debut on an unsuspecting public. Like most of Cheap Trick’s history, the facts are uncertain; there’s no exact release date to be found, but anyone who was there suggests that it was around the first week of February. This is very on brand for the band: the album liner notes explain that Cheap Trick is a band without a past.
With its first record, Cheap Trick created something truly unique, which has been both a blessing and a curse for the band over the past four+ decades…

CHEAP TRICK – In Color +7 [Japan BluSpec CD2 remastered miniLP]

Reaching the end with the excellent CHEAP TRICK Japanese BluSpec CD2 remastered versions including loads of bonus tracks, here’s their second studio album ”In Color” nicely augmented with 7 extra songs, all collectible material.
Cheap Trick’s self-titled debut album showed the band was capable of playing tough rock ‘n’ roll with the best of the era. But it was their second LP, ”In Color”, released just seven months later, that proved they had a melodic, pop side to them too.
”In Color” was guided by Tom Werman, an A&R man who signed Cheap Trick to Epic Records and had previously worked on Ted Nugent’s albums and would become an ’80s hard rock top producer.
Simply put, Cheap Trick polish their sound and made a Power Pop Classic with ”In Color”. It’s incredible, but now, more than 40 years after released, you never get bored listening to these early Cheap Trick albums. And this remaster is pure gold…

CHEAP TRICK – Heaven Tonight +5 [Japan BluSpec CD2 remastered miniLP]

Reaching the end with the excellent CHEAP TRICK Japanese BluSpec CD2 remastered versions including loads of bonus tracks, here’s their third studio album ”Heaven Tonight” augmented with five extra songs.
”Heaven Tonight” is considered Cheap Trick’s best album by many fans and critics. Like the band’s previous album, it was produced by Tom Werman, but the difference between the two records is substantial. Where ‘In Color’ often sounded emasculated, ”Heaven Tonight” regains the powerful, arena-ready punch of Cheap Trick, but crosses it with a clever radio-friendly production that relies both on synthesizers and studio effects.
And it has “Surrender”, perhaps Cheap Trick’s best song ever…

By the time their fourth studio album Dream Police arrived in September 1979, Cheap Trick had gone from cult following to mega-stardom — all within a year. ”Dream Police” was recorded (including a young dude named S. Lukather on one song), wrapped up and ready to roll out in 1978 when a funny thing happened: their record company decided to release the live album ‘At Budokan’ in Japan due to their rabid fan base there, but stateside demands for the import grew so great that Epic took a gamble and issued it domestically.
That live album was the big breakthrough the band had been waiting for and, seemingly overnight, everyone…

By the dawn of 1980, Cheap Trick had risen to major star status following the success of ‘At Budokan’ and ‘Dream Police’, both released in 1979 to major critical and commercial triumph. It looked as if the new decade was going to belong to this fab foursome.
The band wanted to make a change while retaining their trademark sound. To help them do this, they called in perhaps the biggest gun in terms of record producers, George Martin, the man behind the board for nearly every note of the Beatles’ recording career…

CHEAP TRICK – Woke Up With A Monster [Rare Japanese Edition +1]

With the very good new CHEAP TRICK album – a band that never fails in delivering quality material, many of you asked for some of their other, lesser known records. We think their 1994’s “Woke Up With A Monster” is a criminally underrated platter, appeared in a time when Cheap Trick’s melodic feel-good vibe wasn’t in the music industry focus.
Amidst competing with the grunge movement of its time, ”Woke Up With A Monster” pulsated then, and radiates still, in 2021. With songs that beat down the door of stagnant Rock Music and kicks it’s weak ass from sunrise to sundown, this is a Cheap Trick album that sets an example of just how to rock steady in the face of pop-cultural ignorance of the day.
With songwriting contributions from the likes of Jim Peterik, Mark Spiro & Terry Reid and a bright production by Ted Templeman, ”Woke Up With A Monster” is a kickin’ album that glows bright amongst the glut of mid 1990’s Rock and Hard Rock album releases, which many seemed to stray away from having any semblance of Classic Rock influence all together.
This is the rare Japanese Edition never reissued, featuring a bonus track never included into any compilation released after…

HEAVY METAL – Music From The Motion Picture [Vinyl LP reissue] (2017)

After many requests, here’s in exclusive the legendary “HEAVY METAL : Music From The Motion Picture“, in its 2-LP recent release. This is part of the Rhino Records ‘Rocktober’ series, an annual campaign featuring limited edition vinyl releases of classic albums, issued in October, 2017.
The 2-LP release is only available in the U.S. and Canada, already sold out now and very expensive.
‘Heavy Metal’ is a 1981 Canadian-American adult animated sci-fi-fantasy film based in the Heavy Metal Magazine, which was the basis for the film. Like the magazine, the film features a great deal of graphic violence, sexuality, and nudity, censored at various countries.
The movie soundtrack features songs inspired by the story, but most the artists involved aren’t musically ‘heavy metal’ at all. The term is used here into other context.
Musically, “HEAVY METAL : Music From The Motion Picture” offers more than the title suggests, and the songs fit perfectly with their respective film segments. Most songs from the likes of Journey, Cheap Trick, Blue Oyester Club, etc, are exclusive to this soundtrack, some never appeared into any other release, some are different from the originals, noted as ‘Soundtrack Version’.
