L.A. BLUES AUTHORITY Vol. V – Cream Of The Crop (1994) *HQ*

As requested, here’s the last volume from the really good L.A. BLUES AUTHORITY series, the heavy blues-rock project created by producer Mike Varney. On ”L.A. BLUES AUTHORITY Vol. V – Cream Of The Crop” some of Rock’s premier guitar players and singers pay tribute to one of the greatest blues / rock guitar bands of all time – the Eric Clapton, Jack Bruce, Ginger Baker trio known as CREAM.
On this volume some of the talented guitarists play the 6-strings and also perform lead vocals, others only play guitar and terrific guest vocalists are at charge of the mic, such as Neal Schon & Joe Lynn Turner on a great version of ‘Sittin’ On Top Of The World’. Or the unique Glenn Hughes and Night Ranger’s Jeff Watson on the killer ‘Born Under A Bad Sign’.
Performers of both guitar & vocals include Pat Travers, Richie Kotzen, the great Rick Derringer, Leslie West, and more. Virtuoso Michael Lee Firkins is in command of the lone instrumental, a scorching version of ‘Cat’s Squirrel’, with Little John Chrisley on harmonica.
On almost all tracks the rhythm section is in more than capable hands: bassist Tim Bogert (Vanilla Fudge, Cactus), Mike Onesko (Blindside Blues Band) on rhythm guitars, and versatile Jeff Martin (Racer X, Badlands) on drums…

L.A. BLUES AUTHORITY Vol II – Glenn Hughes Blues (1993) *HQ*

Of the five L.A. BLUES AUTHORITY albums released, Volume II stands out as the most special. Following a September 1992 invitation from Mike Varney and Ken Ciancimino to create a blues album—prompted by fan requests—the voice of rock Glenn Hughes decided to document personal life changes through music.
Recorded in early October with close friends and released as part of the L.A. BLUES AUTHORITY series – Volume II Glenn Hughes Blues is dedicated to fans worldwide and marks the start of new material, signed “It’s good to be back, one day at a time”.
Indeed, some of these songs were written by Hughes years before, others for this LP. The whole thing was recorded & mixed in the first two weeks of October, and fortunately was just the first of many new Glenn Hughes albums to come.
The guys playing? Europe’s John Norum, Mick Mars of Mötley Crüe, Warren DeMartini of Ratt, Richie Kotzen of Poison & Mr. Big, Mark Kendall of Great White fame, Tony Franklin on bass alongside Hughes, capable Mark Jordan on keyboards, and more.
You cant go wrong here… this was Glenn Hughes comeback, and a great one!

L.A. BLUES AUTHORITY Vol I – L.A. Blues Authority (1992) *HQ*

As requested, here’s the sumptuous debut 1992 album by L.A. BLUES AUTHORITY, the heavy blues-rock project created by producer Mike Varney featuring Rock star musicians like Zakk Wylde, Steve Lukather, Richie Kotzen, Brad Gillis, Glenn Hughes, Joe Lynn Turner, etc, performing classic blues covers.
A gathering of prominent hard rock and metal players backing various lead vocalists on blues standards, “L.A. BLUES AUTHORITY Vol I” delivers some terrific performances.
Zakk Wylde kills playing guitar & vocals on ‘Baby Please Don’t Go’, Night Ranger’s Brad Gillis add a lot of soul to ‘Same Old Blues’ with drums by Fred Coury of Cinderella and bass by Phil Soussan. Then the great Glenn Hughes & Pat Thrall bring some mojo to ‘Messin’ with the Kid’.
Having Richie Kotzen & Steve Lukather on the same song (You Don’t Love Me) is a pleasure, same with George Lynch on a hot version of ‘Rollin’ and Tumblin’. And if you thought this is a blues-only album wait to hear the metallic of Kevin DuBrow on ‘How Blue Can You Get’.
The rest of the musicians are top class including Paul Gilbert, Billy Sheehan, Stuart Hamm, Greg Bissonette and many more. Production is really good, organic, and the album as a whole doesn’t feels disjointed, but killerrrrr!

THE DEAD DAISIES – Holy Ground (2021)

With their upcoming new album “Holy Ground“, THE DEAD DAISIES have started the next chapter welcoming new band member: “The Voice Of Rock” Glenn Hughes on lead vocals and bass guitar, joining guitarists Doug Aldrich, David Lowy and drummer Deen Castronovo.
The Dead Daisies 2021 is probably an even more muscular and heavy beast than we’re heard previously and some of the riffs etched in these grooves are crushing! This is an album made to be played loud (and heard live of course) and it’s also one that is beautifully balanced with the mentioned heaviness tempered by a little funky vibe as well as some wonderful lighter moments…
